I was today years old when I realized my last menstruation occurred on the full moon and that the name of that is the red moon cycle according to traditional menstrual wisdom. I’ve never got too much into that side of the cycle but I do find it quite interesting. Which brings me to something I have been getting into recently.
Cycle Tracking. So for about the past year to year and a half I’ve been tracking my symptoms throughout the different phases of the cycle and using it as data to more or less reassure myself that everything is okay, I’m just in my luteal phase. I also have been more aware and honoring of the rest needed and appreciated this time of the month. Now the rest prioritization all started when my mom gave me a book she read called the red tent 📕 and it’s a novel that my mom talks about frequently. Describing it as women who on their time of the month would use that time as a ritual, rest and talk. I haven’t finished the book yet (it’s on my list), but I envision it as a time to gather around and support one another or just enjoy each others company while providing wisdom where needed. Her recollections of the book is what first introduced me to the idea of learning more about the cycle: what it is and how to respond to it.
After recording my symptoms for the better half of almost 2 years I’m now at the point where I want to align with the different phases in a way that helps combat some of my common issues such as : acne, fatigue, mood swings, and sometimes depression. I always first turn to diet when wanting to try something health wise as it’s something I have direct control over day to day.
That said, going into the new year I am going to start planning meals around which of the 4 stages of the cycle I’m in: Menstrual, follicular, ovulation or luteal. With a tailored focus at each phase:
Menstrual– Iron replenishment
Follicular– Lighter and energizing
Ovulation– heavy and hormone supporting
Luteal– warm comforting foods
My meals will include lots of meat and fat as I hear those are good building blocks for a successful, anti inflammatory month. I’m coming up with a plan for each stage and will use as a grocery shopping guide.
